Shirley Hood

Shirley Marie Hood, 61, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, August 18. She was born April 22, 1952, to Charlotte Throckmorton Hood and James Hood. She attended Indianola public schools, graduating from Indianola High School, then attended and graduated from Central College. She worked at Woodward State Hospital-School then did graduate course work in behavioral psychology at Drake University, after which she worked at the Family Service Agency of Genesee County and Genesee County Association for Retarded Citizens in Flint, MI. After returning to Des Moines, she worked for ChildServe (Children’s Habilitation Center) and Youth Emergency Services and Shelter before retiring.

Shirl was preceded in death by her father and mother; her step-father, Milton A. “Ál” Gonzalez; and her older brother, James Hood, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Wilson of Des Moines; younger brother, Alan Gonzalez of Oskaloosa; aunt, Norma Throckmorton of Indianola; uncle, Danny (Jan) Throckmorton of Denison; stepdaughters, Jennifer Perry of Des Moines and Meganne (Matthew) Masko of Fordville, ND; nieces and nephews, her beloved dog Cumgache, and many friends.

Shirley lived right down the street from us.  Her brother Jim Hood was my best friend.  When it was time for us to leave Whittier Elementary School, we heard that in Jr. High - you had to have a boyfriend or girlfriend.  So we agreed to be that for each other.  Shirley was a sweet girl. Rest in peace Shirl.
